I’m a newbie to the grant-writing process who wants to see how to formulate a proposal to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). When I looked for books to help, this one, in its third edition, seemed to be the seminal text in this domain. Its rigor and comprehensiveness did not disappoint. It took the grant-writing process seriously enough to convey challenges with gravity, yet it was approachable enough to make the entire process seem doable.
An example grant fills the book’s chapters as a template. It showed how to submit the grant electronically, but it mainly focuses not on technicalities but rather on strengthening the grant. The chapter on the budget intimidated me the most going in, but I left feeling confident that constructing a budget was something I could do.
Reading this book is just a start, but it is a necessary start. It clears the field and sets expectations. It can help in grant-writing groups for new writers at institutions. Even those with some experience but who want to up their game can benefit. Highly recommended to those writing grants to the NIH!
