Artificial Intelligence

Co-Existence: The Next Phase in AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has penetrated its roots into the world’s economic ecosystem, especially in the electronic and computer world. We’ve learned how to use it as a “co-intelligence,” the title of Ethan Mollick’s last book. Now, many of us, he says, are having to grapple with co-existing with AI as a part of our daily lives. For example, he used AI to help write this book so intimately that he can’t distinguish which parts are his and which parts come from his Claude assistant. He helps us grapple with what that might mean personally and socially as the years progress.

AI conjures great fears among many, including those who are most closely tied to its development. The Great Replacement Theory says that it might replace human workers in all forms of work – especially white-collar work. To counter, humanity has figured out ways to move work from one realm to another in past industrial revolutions, albeit with some turmoil. Such a pattern of disruptive change might continue here.

Or we might meet the end of our current order as robots and AI bots take over the world. He speculates to a limited degree on this latter point, but chooses to focus on ways we can make AI serve as a good for all because doing so will better both scenarios. Either way, if the prior few years provide any guide, AI will continue to elevate its integration with modern life. Making sure that integration benefits all of humanity – not just the powerful – will remain a task for educators, healthcare workers, and IT staff.

He gears this book towards those interested in the fields that we call management. Its text centers on how to manage AI, personally and socially. He’s interested in how organizations and individuals effectively go about in the world to accomplish work. He’s less interested in the spiritual, political, and historical domains even as he suggests that these humanities domains might see a resurgence of interest in a post-AI world. Futurist speculations, grounded in analysis, fill this book and will draw readers; what remains, of course, is history’s verdict on these speculations. We’ll have to give it at least 5-10 more years to observe that outcome.
