Artificial Intelligence and AI agents can seem like a mystery to the world of coders and engineers. It’s presented with words like “super intelligence,” and being non-deterministic, it can be unpredictable at times. The normal rules of programming seem not to apply. But in truth they always do, and AI still runs on Turing Machines. In this book, Thomas Caldwell makes AI and specifically AI agents much more accessible by showing how they can be constructed and run through code.
Python and Anthropic are his main tools of choice, but a software architect can easily abstract those choices away to any programming language and any LLM (e.g., OpenAI) with an SDK. He presents design patterns of ways that the LLM can be used to, say, be a critic or a judge and work together with other agents. In this quickly evolving field, he offers a comprehensive snapshot of the active issues in April 2026.
I found the whole book fascinating. Caldwell demystified so many details for me by helping me move from single-prompt thinking into multi-prompt decision-making. I was able to access his GitHub repo of code to see how I can mentally translate his algorithms into PHP, my language of choice. This work doesn’t inspire with uses, but instead investigates into the nuts and bolts of AI agents. He clearly speaks with long-term experience implementing AI solutions and begins each chapter with a real use case.
This book’s audience includes mainly developers and engineers. Organizational leaders without in-depth programming knowledge will likely be snowed by this material. It’s also not for newbies to coding, though junior developers could probably follow along. It illustrates how to turn prompts – especially series of prompts – into code that accomplishes some tasks in the world. MCP, REST APIs, and other noteworthy technologies are all covered. If you’re an engineer looking to make a deep dive into creating AI agents, this affordable book – with an independently published price – is the one I’d recommend to pick up first.
