The Right to Speak: Working with the Voice

Months of formal voice training has been something that has attracted me for decades, but I could never justify the time or the expense for it. Obviously, anyone who leads groups and speaks to groups regularly needs to attend to the voice. It’s still difficult to get the feedback necessary to articulate words in an engaging manner. This book will not offer customized feedback, but to the self-disciplined, it offers ways to internalize principles of good speaking.

I lack the education to judge Rodenburg’s approach, but she comes from a critically acclaimed (British) background. She presents a lot of vocal training exercises, which I honestly skimmed, but her general framework for healthy speaking made a lot of sense. I particularly enjoyed hearing her remedies about what to do when I run out of breath.

I will never achieve the status of a professional speaker, but this book gave me access to ways to build my self-confidence in speaking. We all should feel comfortable within a healthy speaking voice, and this book helped build my own as I learned.
