Science Writing-Communication

The Narrative Gym for Science Graduate Students & Postdocs

Communication to the wider non-scientific world is a constant challenge to scientists. We rely on the public for funding, and we aim to contribute to their lives. Yet our communication sometimes can get into a rut by communicating to a small inner circle of scientific colleagues instead. So the authors suggest applying a simple framework to enhance the reader’s ability to communicate by focusing on the crux of effective communication.

The authors focus on graduate students and postdocs for a simple reason: They have by-and-large mastered a specific set of tools, and communication is becoming a larger part of their world. They must apply for jobs and for funding from those who aren’t as enamored with their field as much as they are. Learning to constantly refine one’s elevator pitch is becoming an essential part of their life.

This small book offers some refinements on the ABT framework, presented in more depth in Don’t Be Such a Scientist! This work presents as a small workbook to refine one’s thoughts and words into a more punctuated form. It offers specific tools like using if/then clauses and provoking hope/fear emotions to appeal to the masses.

Although this version of The Narrative Gym is marketed towards graduate students and postdocs, anyone interested in refining their scientific communication can benefit. It’s the most concise version of the ABT framework to give the bare elements of what it takes to communicate with more narrative structure.
