With the Internet, the world has become glut with information, and the domain of scientific knowledge is no exception. The challenge, however, has become implementing that knowledge into healthcare practice. Papers are published, read a few times, cited by other authors, and often die in scientific journals. Those journals are great, but the pipeline to practice (the clinic and patient lives) needs to open up more. Translational science and implementation science aim to do just that. They want to bind bench to bedside and back more closely.
The trouble is that most books about implementation science are written for researchers who want to advance the field by providing more information. Practitioners, like myself, are left to pick up fragments that apply to themselves. To remedy, this book seeks to address practice while still being deeply informed by implementation science research. As the subtitle suggests, it’s written for action.
Tauted by the shiny medal on the front, the prose is excellent and accessible. It explains all the nuances of the field and what it takes to bring an innovation into everyday practice in whatever venues it must be applied. Beyond dissemination, it also talks about establishing feedback channels, addressing local policymakers, and scaling up from pilot projects to bigger frontiers. No major topic in the field is skipped.
To reiterate, this book is focused on implementation science practitioners, not just researchers. As such, it’s mainly geared toward graduate school classrooms where students aim to apply this knowledge in healthcare practice. At this time, it’s the best out there for this aim. It also addresses program managers and other implementers out of school. Funding agencies and biomedical researchers all realize that closing the gap from research to results is absolutely necessary. This book teaches how to address that gap ethically, responsibly, and with necessary haste.
