The Executive Mindset: Unlocking the Strategic Power Inside Every Manager

Learning to think like the “next level up” is a challenge in any professional group. As the saying goes, what got you here isn’t going to get you there. The gap between management and leadership remains large. As you move up an organization’s chart, mentoring is harder to come by and free passes to make mistakes become fewer. Reading books like Bobby Lampkin’s provide opportunities to level up your thinking and behavior to bring further impact to your business and career.

Frankly, some of the earlier material in the book seemed repetitive or redundant to my current career challenges. For instance, communication and strategic thinking got me to my current position. However, other chapters later in the book like measuring what executives value and the executive presence seemed more relevant.

What could move this book from adequate to great would be saying something new or engaging. Instead, it’s just another book of sage advice without any new data or a fresh perspective. Sage advice is helpful, but it’s also everywhere in the book world. If I’m investing time in a book, I hope to garner something fresh. While solid, this book lacks a newness that would attract a larger audience.
