What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions

We know enough about the physics of earth and the universe to be able to predict what’d happen in absurd situations, like a neuron star hitting the earth, flying a plane on Uranus, or experiencing a Richter magnitude -2 earthquake. Of course, we don’t talk about it because most of us aren’t physics geeks.

Fortunately, Randall Munroe is, and he has a great sense of humor dealing with the absurd. He runs an online blog where he takes questions about “What if?” scenarios. He shares the best of his answers here. And by “best,” I mean scientifically accurate and humorously entertaining.

The uniqueness of his humor is represented in the fact that this book is in a tenth anniversary edition. It’s good enough that a publisher thought it’d be worth republishing. My fourteen-year-old child, rarely a fan of my audiobooks, often asked to listen to it on the way home from school. It’d make a great gift for any science geeks – especially physics geeks – in your home for any special occasion.
