An individual’s early career often sets the trajectory for future success, for better or for worse. Yet during this time, the path to success is almost universally less clear, and obstacles abound. Young professionals need mentoring and solid advice to advance, but hard-to-access options to get aid can conflict with each other. Now, a post-pandemic climate leaves remote and hybrid work environments where interpersonal interactions are less frequent. In this book, Zides tries to coach eager workers how to think effectively about this changing world in order to make better decisions for themselves.
This work is especially geared to those in corporate work environments where career paths can seem like a cookie cutter. He teaches how to research/plan career paths and to find the courage to make unconventional choices when reaching a goal. He sees professional fulfillment as a highly personal value. Because they vary so much, thinking about those values and life choices becomes paramount. He pays particular attention to how post-pandemic dynamics affect how we should approach them.
Zides relies on the fount of his own career to provide this wisdom. He holds an MBA and built a company only to see it disintegrate during the bust of 2000. He rebuilt his career at corporate offices. Despite outward success, he was not content. Instead, he transitioned into founding his own consulting business that enabled him to spend more time with his family instead of traveling. He took many sidesteps but resiliently rebounded to push forward to his goals.
Doubtless, this book will serve to promote awareness of this new venture while also helping to establish him as a mentor. Obviously, younger professionals can benefit from his sagacity. Although he pays attention to remote work environments, he does not delve into these conditions deeply enough for those to draw an additional audience. The #PACE method (prepare, apply, commit, evaluate) serves as the backbone for this book’s organization, but doesn’t tread much new intellectual ground. Indeed, the writing consists of fairly standard conversational fodder, only updated for the contemporary business climate. Those who do not have good access to a helpful mentor will benefit the most.
