Management-Business

The Incredible Value of Employee Power Unleashed

The author of this book is someone who has spent most of his life in the hotel industry. He is passionate about the value of employee satisfaction and seemingly has made it to be the cornerstone of his professional philosophy. He shares that passion with readers in the context of this book. By supplying copious personal examples, he attempts to get the reader interested in his perspective on business and specifically management.

However, his writing style falls short. It’s verbose and not at all succinct. It’s filled with extra words that distract from the main context. There were a couple of chapters that were strong (such as the chapter on meetings); nonetheless, most of the remaining chapters were not focused on the main topics. I found myself reading quickly because so many of the words were unnecessary.

I wonder how much Stewart reads books in his spare time. The organization of this book is unorthodox. Most pages has abundant white-space at the bottom of the page. Many quotations are placed in headers. Some words are bolded while others are in all capitals. Emoticons make an appearance as well. While a little unorthodoxy is usually welcomed to keep readers’ attention, the high degree causes me to question the author’s judgment. What’s more is that the rule-breaking does not seem to have a point.

His advice on management seems relatively sound. It correlates with good practices I have seen in my bosses and in myself through the people whose work I oversee. The basic premise of the book – that employee satisfaction is a cornerstone of leading people – is an important one. However, the writing style and the editing fall short of good practice. The author could have tightened this 176-page book into a 75-page book without losing much impact.
