Lovers at the Museum: A Short Story

This well-written short story, set in Spain, shares a shocking scenario. Before the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, a bride is found inside and asleep with a naked man. The thing is, the man is not her groom, and they do not know each others’ names. How did they break in? And why are they together in the first place? A police detective peels the metaphoric onion, layer by layer, but uncovers nothing nefarious.

This short story tells a straightforward feel-good tale of quick romance. It accelerates an already-rushed timeline of love at first sight. Although the plot makes strong use of hyperbole, the story remains eerily relatable. Anyone with a romantic bone can understand being swiftly pulled away by a fantasized other, especially if aided with certain libations. Isabel Allende allows us to indulge in such an angelic dream… if only for 24 pages.
